Salazar, Unions, Citizens Rally for Sen. Leroy Garcia

Ken Salazar, former Secretary of the Interior under Barack Obama, came to Pueblo Saturday morning to oppose the recall efforts against Colorado Senate Leroy Garcia at the United Steelworkers’ 2102 Hall.

“These forces that are coming in from the outside are trying to take away one of Pueblo’s sons,” Salazar said. “We’re not going to let that happen, so we’re going to fight it and we’re going to win.”

Salazar promised to support Garcia against the recall efforts:

“I’ll do everything I can ... to make sure that we show them that this son of Pueblo — this hero of Pueblo — this marine of Pueblo — this sixth generation Coloradan — remains President of the Colorado Senate moving forward.”

A crowd of Pueblo residents joined Salazar at Steelworkers’ Hall along with Garcia and Southern Colorado Labor Council President Hilary Glasgow. The United Steelworkers also issued a statement Saturday that they oppose the effort to recall Garcia.

The fight against the recall effort consists of having conversations with voters and addressing misinformation, Garcia said.

“There is a lot of misinformation from time to time — and we want to make sure that we’re talking about the issues that are important to Southern Colorado,” he said.

Three-fourths of the funding from the recall effort is coming from outside Garcia’s Senate District, Garcia added.

“We’re just going to make sure we don’t have groups in Fort Lupton telling Pueblo what to do — especially when we had an election last year and we won by 74%,” Garcia said. “That was Pueblo’s decision.”
